Cat Shedding: What Actually Works (and What's a Waste of Money)
In a temperate country, cats shed seasonally β a heavy moult in spring and autumn. In Thailand and across Southeast Asia, many indoor cats shed almost continuously, because aircon and warm ambient temperatures confuse the seasonal signal. If your flat is permanently furry, that's not unusual here. But it is manageable.
Why the hair keeps coming
- Most of the fur on your sofa is dead undercoat that your cat couldn't remove grooming itself.
- A cat's tongue is built for cleaning, not for pulling out loose undercoat. It only reaches so deep.
- The result: loose fur stays in the coat, then sheds onto everything you own.
What genuinely helps
- Daily brushing with a tool that reaches the undercoat. Five minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday.
- Brush BEFORE the coat dries after a bath or damp wipe β loose hair lifts much more easily.
- A de-shedding comb for double-coated cats, a slicker brush for short-haired cats. Using the wrong one just polishes the topcoat and does nothing about shedding.
- Good nutrition β a lot of excess shedding is a coat-health problem, not a grooming one.
What doesn't work
- Lint rollers as a strategy. That's dealing with the symptom.
- Expensive pet vacuums with a 'cat attachment'. Cats hate the noise and you'll use it twice.
- Shaving your cat. It can cause skin damage and sunburn, and the undercoat grows back oddly.
- Bathing constantly. Over-bathing wrecks the skin barrier and can increase shedding.
If no amount of brushing helps and your cat is also scratching, losing patches, or has bald spots, that's a vet question β it's usually mites, a fungal issue, or a thyroid problem, not ordinary shedding.
